Character Name: Oz Vessalius
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Canon Point: Retrace 77
Background/History: Canon || Oz Vessalius
Personality:
Oz is good at making a positive first impression. He's just so cheerful, always smiling and staying lighthearted no matter the situation. And while that may seem strange, smiles are actually what Oz uses to protect himself. He's quick to smile, to laugh, to make fun, and to enjoy whatever he's doing at the time he's doing them. He's seemingly not the type of person who'd let stress and fatigue get in the way of a good time, much less worries of any kind. And this is all partly true. He genuinely does like setting people at ease, and he likes smiles more than frowns. Not to say that he isn't confrontational when he needs to be, just that he prefers being friendly if he has the choice. In fact, he always prefers being friendly. It's almost unnatural the way he deals with every situation. In fact, it can get a bit creepy. It's not that Oz is too stupid to grasp the gravity of a situation, he just has the habit of hiding his true feelings from everyone around him.
Oz is the type of person who shows his affection with well-meaning teasing, though it often gets a little borderline-sadistic if he really likes you (and if he thinks it's fun to get a rise out of you). His closest friend, Gilbert, would be quick to say that he's like a tyrant. Oz enjoys acting as the 'villain' and has frequently pretended to be evil and sadistic, mostly because he likes throwing off the people around him. He is also incredibly flirtatious, and is bit of a ladies man. He's very weak to cute girls, unless said girls are evil and bloodthirsty, to which hey he can deal with that. Maybe. He doesn't deal well with people like him, those who are slightly two-faced and capable of fake smiles, and he's a lot more astute than people credit him for. It's difficult to get a rattled expression from him, as he is very calm in the face of most situations. He manages to hide his feelings quite well.
Oz is talented at adapting, a skill that he likes to flaunt when in bizarre situations, but the skill has darker reasons than expected. He doesn't like to cause trouble for others, not including pranks and/or light-hearted mischief, but actual pain and discomfort. He refuses to be a burden and in that way trivializes his own self-worth. His problems aren't important, his distress is never important, and if he's going to cause trouble then it's better to pretend that he has no problems in the first place. This is why he excels in keeping a smile on his face almost all the time. Most of this stems from the knowledge that he's unwanted especially in his father's eyes. He used to crave for attention, but he's long since been cured of that. Knowing that you're unwanted does terrible things to your self-esteem.
And despite his horrible childhood, Oz develops in a few positive ways in canon. Having been home-schooled for most of his childhood and then tossed into an alternate dimension full of blood thirsty chains for the rest, Oz comes out of his situation like a champ. He gets friends. He finds people he begins to care for. Despite his cynicism over the idea of being used just because he is a 'Vessalius', Oz truly begins to believe that they are worried for his sake, and not for the sake of his name. He even begins to assert his own identity from Jack's shadow. He is Oz Vessalius, thank you very much. He is a completely different person. He is his own being. He eventually realizes that hiding his problems only makes things worse (thanks to a giant wake-up call courtesy of one Elliot Nightray) and starts putting his efforts into trusting people.
Unfortunately, his progress comes to an abrupt halt later in canon. Jack, who is decidedly not what history portrayed him as, succeeds in abolishing all of that self-worth with just a few words. Oz is someone who does not deserve to hold the Vessalius name, in fact, he's not even a someone at all. His existence has brought nothing but shame and ruin to the people he's cared about the most, and his existence only goes so far as to be a chain. Oz is a tool to be used by Jack and nothing more. And the truly unfortunate event is that Oz believes Jack. He remembers the true past of what occurred 100 years ago when he killed people he hadn't wished to kill and watched as Alice sacrificed herself on his behalf. Knowing that she died to save him is what really affects Oz. Why? Because Oz's worst fear is having the people he cares about the most get hurt because of him.
Oz also has a fragment of Jack's soul in his body, which allows Jack to control his body from time to time.
On the surface level, Jack is almost a carbon copy of Oz. He's bright, fun, laid back, with the tendency to flirt with the ladies and go through life without a care for the world. Jack is loads more charismatic than Oz though, and has the air of someone who is used to wielding power and proving to others that he has the right. He has a flair for the stage and more importantly, is quite skilled at deceiving others. He thinks nothing of using people and tossing them aside for the sake of his goal. No one is as important to him as Lacie. He is completely obsessed with Lacie and is fixated with the idea that in order to make her happy, he has to drop the entire world into the Abyss. Why? Because Lacie is lonely! And if she can't come back to the world, then the entire world can join her instead. Jack is already knee-deep in the blood of the people he's sacrificed, and is determined to see it through to the end. He's capable of smiling while being inescapably cruel and simply does not care about the people who could be affected by his schemes. Whatever remorse Jack does feel has long since vanished. The memories that Oz sees feature a simple, happy Jack. One that is still fixated on Lacie, but is also content spending time with her and her brother. That time, sadly, has passed. He's spent over 100 years growing older then younger over and over again. Any shred of sanity that Jack may have at this point has disappeared.
Jack loves Lacie with all his heart and his soul. He believes that his existence is worthless compared to hers and if he had to die for her, then he would do it happily. It's a very dangerous love, not only for him, but for everyone standing in Jack's way.
Abilities/Powers:
Oz is capable of summoning a large scythe and chains in order to pierce the enemy. He can use it to destroy other Chains or creatures born in the Abyss. He, theoretically, has enough power to destroy the balance of the Abyss and the world. (Which isn't applicable in Haven, since there is no Abyss). His body is normal, despite belonging to Jack, and has an Incuse on his chest. The Incuse is merely a seal that count downs to how long Oz can use his power before being dragged down to the Abyss. Oz is somewhat skilled in swordfighting, but is better at making a run for it. He knows how to use a revolver as well.
Jack has the ability to use the power of scythe and chains as well and can completely take over at will.
